8. Shoe press-design and applicationsShoe press technology improves dewatering of paper sheet technology. Due to higher dewatering it reduces the consumption of steam at dryer section. The major argument to incorporate shoe press was to increase the machine capacity of existing machine and to reduce the capital intensity of new machine. Shoe press technology is also an energy-efficient technology. The dewatering capacity of a press is a function of both the time spent in nip zone and the load applied. The long nip of the shoe press allows for much greater time in the nip zone. It allows for a much higher linear load to be applied without creating too high peak pressure. The addition of a Shoe press to an existing press arrangement has improved paper dryness after press by 4% - 5% "This facilitates higher machine speeds and improved efficiency because of better internal bonding of the sheet". Agro residue fiber has weak strength properties which constraints the load at press section. Agro residues fiber can wihtstand a maximum linear load of 500 KN/m. 9. Improved bleachability of bagasses and cotton stalk pulp by xylanase enzymeAmong ten fungal strains; Aspergillus, Oryzae was the most effective strain for the production of Xylanase. The proper incubation period for the maximal production of xylanase, by Aspergillus and Oryzae were recorded after 5 days at 45ºC. The activity of xylanase being 2.45 u/m and biomass production were reached 5.88g/L under the same condition. Alternatively, Xylanase treatment improves accessibility of bleaching chemical to the pulps, decreasing diffusion resistance of the degraded lignin. As a result, pulps treated with xylanase show lower kappa number and higher brightness than the pulps, not treated with the enzyme. Also strength properties of paper increased clearly after treatment by enzyme breaking length raised from 1511.6 to 2325.1m for bagasse and from 1000.5 to 1690.9m for cotton stalk. Avaliação de uma planta piloto de MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor - Reator Biológico com Leito Móvel) para tratamento de efluente de uma fábrica de celulose e papelEl proceso MBBR (siglas en inglés de moving bed biofilm reactor) es un desarrollo tecnológico que incorpora las mejores características de los procesos con crecimiento de biomasa y biomasa adherida (biofilm). Por tanto, en el mismo volumen del reactor biológico es posible mantener una cantidad más grande de biomasa, de ese modo agregando una cantidad más grande de sustrato a la biodegradación. El principal objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar la biomasa adherida a los portadores (carriers), y evaluar los parámetros operacionales y el rendimiento de una planta piloto MBBR para el tratamiento de efluentes de procesos de pulpa y papel luego del tratamiento preliminar: la decantación primaria, el ajuste del pH, el agregado de nutrientes, el enfriamiento de los efluentes, en condiciones termofílicas. La planta piloto fue manejada dentro de los límites recomendados por la literatura en relación a las cargas orgánicas volumétricas y de superficie de 4,3kg de BOD soluble/m3.d y 43,8g de BOD soluble/m3.d, parecido al límite mas bajo recomendado considerando la concentración promedio de oxígeno disuelto de 2mg/L, y el volumen de los portadores (carriers) igual al 10% del volumen del reactor. Observando el rendimiento del proceso, se verificó que las eficiencias de remoción obtenidas de la Demanda Bioquímica de Oxígeno soluble (BOD soluble - soluble Biochemical Oxygen Demand) y la Demanda Química de Oxígeno soluble (COD soluble - soluble Chemical Oxygen Demand) fueron respectivamente, 56% y 35%, y que el proceso permaneció bastante estable bajo las condiciones dichas.O Papel

Faster and more accurate decision-making using integrated solutions throughout the paper manufacturing processIn the past, many paper manufacturers viewed automatic inspection or web break monitoring as the universal remedy for any application in which both increased productions speeds and high quality are required. However, the improvement potential has not yet been reached using these technologies. Automated processes integrated in web product manufacturing can only be accurately optimized if meaningful information about production defects, along each processing stage, is available well in advance. The solution: linking Web Inspection Systems (WIS) to Web Break Monitoring sensors (WBM) to form a single highly integrated system. The advanced information from the WBM sensor system is transferred to the WIS. During the procces, the WBM performs the tasks involved in capturing events. Then, the overall system acts as a platform in which all of the relevant information needed for monitoring (inspection, analysis, web breaks and events) is collected. This information is used to forecast possible trouble spots during production. 21. Closing the pulp mill chemical cycle using fluidized bed technologyFluidized Bed Technology has been successfully implemented in recovering soda ash from black liquor for a number of pulp mills in India. Agro Pulping Machinery (Agro) has extended this technology to produce steam and power for medium size pulp mills as well as close the chemical recovery loop to produce white liquor and reburn lime mud. With increasing cost of caustic (INR 32/kg), it becomes more cost effective to produce green liquor from the output of the Fluidized Bed Incinerator for black liquor. This green liquor can be converted by conventional means of causticizers and slakers, into white liquor to be reused in pulp cooking process. However, the resulting lime mud is a pollutant and the new process proposed here is to tackle it by using a calciner based on fluidized bed (FB) technology. Since the major cost of the calciner is fuel. Agro´s design includes a closed coupled biomass gasifier that supplier the fuel for burning the lime. The FB calciner produces lime at high purity and efficiency that can be reused in the recausticizing process of the green liquor. Control of boiler emissions in waste paper based small paper mill - A case studyThe case study maily focuses on stack emission and the control strategy adopted in Emami Paper Mills Limited, Unit Gulmohar, where the reduction of stack emission was not only its challenge for existence but also a social commitment to the locality. To reduce the particulate emission, the optimisation in fuel combustion and necessary changes/modification was undertaken in fabric bag filtration system, after thorough investigation and analysis. 30. Sized rightIn July 2012, Bellmer started-up a new TURBOFilm SizerTM for Kuantum Papers in India. After dismantling the existing coater and erecting the TURBOFilm Sizer, the startup was carried out smothly and the original goals of the project were quickly reached. Kuantum Papers, based in the district of Hoshiarpur in the state of Punjab, produces sized and pigmented paper from agro vegetation such as Sarkanda grass and Kahi grass and agro residues such as wheat straw and rice straw. The use of these raw materials by Kuantum Papers to produce paper also helps to reduce environmental degradation since otherwise this raw material is burned. Kuantum Paper produces sized and pigmented paper in a 54 to 100 g/m2 basis weight range and its machine runs at 900 m/min with a total sheet width of 3.82 m. Kuantum Papers had an urgent need to improve its papermaking process to the Turbosizer fitted the bill. Increasing young´s modulus in black belt base structureShoe presses are generally used in pulp, cardboard and paper machines to improve the press section efficiency and to improve paper bulk properties. A shoe press belt is like a changeable roll cover. The bell consists of textile reinforcing structure buried in polyurethane elastomer. In this paper the properties of different base structures and materials used in sleeves are compared. 2- and 3- layer structures are compared as are different base yarn materials. As polyurethane being incompressible material it has to stretch under nip load. Poisson´s ratio is close to 0.5. Without base yarns sleeve would eventually stretch too much to fit in the machine. Pressure in shoe press is gradually increasing on machine direction, causing accelaration to sleeve in the nip. Studies are made in Metso Fabrics textile laboratory and dynamic sleeve tests are made in Metso´s pilot paper machine. Two case studies are included as well. 44. Reuse of purified effluent in the fiber line - Laboratory resultsA close mill system has been one of the main targets in kraft mill development. The ultimate target is to close the circuit so completely that the mill does not have any purge water and does not take any clean water to the process from the water reserves. The target of this work is to partially solve this problem by decreasing the usage of clean water in fiberline. An experimental test was conducted to find out how the mill effluent can act as bleach plant raw water after secondary treatment. The effluent was collected from the secondary clarifier or a market pulp mill and used as dilution water so that the effluent was present in the A, D0, and D1 stage reactions. The pulps used were mill cooked and oxygen delignified eucalyptus and softwood pulps. The sequences were ECF sequences with or without the HexA removal stage. According to the results, the secondary treated effluent is suitable wash water for bleaching. The secondary treatment removes the lignin from the effluent and the inorganic compounds and the color is inert in the bleaching reactions. Additionally, the purified efluent proved to be suitable with and without the A stage and for hardwood and softwood. The purified effluent does not cause any brightness ceiling and, when the Cl content is high, it increases the brightness development. To stimulate the circulation and hazardous process conditions, the Eop stage was conducted with a high carry-over from the D0 stage. The carry-over naturally decreases the brightness after the Eop stage, but the difference was the same when the D0 stage was conducted with deionized water of effluent. At the laboratory scale, there is no evidence of any negative effect of using effluent in the bleaching process. Enviro-friendly nansulate coating for select applications in seshasyee paperAn Innovative scheme using Nanotechnology integrating Corrosion mitigation with low temperature heat containment had been developed specifically for use in Paper mills. The specialty of NansulateR coating which had innumerable successful heat recovery case studies to its credit is planned to be extended to hitherto untried applications in Seshasayee Paper and Boards Ltd. The paper lighlights the protective feature of corrosion mitigation in one case and yet effecting energy transfer and Carbon emission reduction in low end heat recovery in other case. The case study is unique in that NansulateR concept is being initiated in stack of Coal fired Boiler with the singular objective of corrosion prevention of the base material. The other case study relates to efficient heat containment and CUI prevention in chiller unit of ClO2 plant with NansulateR coating application. Best practices for copier and paper sheet storages: a case study from TNPLAutomated Storage and Retrieval systems (ASRS) are high-bay storages used for storing and retrieving products automatically with high in feed and out feed throughputs per hour. This technology carefully weaves in the hardware with software to insure quick and large transfers with error free and safe handling and delivery of the product. Due to mill expansions, industry as a whole is facing severe shortage of space. ASRS are being preferred in paper mills at their Finishing house and utilized with great success as an intermediate production buffers and finished products shipping storages. 48. Difficulties in the application of the Arrhenius Model to predict thermal printing lifetimeThe Arrhenius model is widely used in accelerated aging studies to predict the durability of the properties of both paper and ink. The Arrhenius model assumes that the rate of chemical reactions (k) depends exclusively on the temperature at which they occur, being expected a linear relation between the reaction rate and the inverse of the absolute temperature (T). This study demonstrates that the application of this model should not be indiscriminately, that there are several restrictions in some cases. In this study, the Arrhenius model was used to predict the durability of printing made with thermal transfer ribbon and on thermal sensitive paper. The parameter used to monitor the accelerated aging was the optical thermal transfer ribbon, it was observed, at high temperatures, the degradation of the material that comes from the ribbon. This degradation occurs due to side reactions that are not observed under natural conditions of aging. Enhanced microbiology control for cooling towersThis paper discusses a technology that was developed by Ashland and which has been utilized for several years to provide excellent MB control in paper machines. Recently, the same technologywas adapted for cooling tower MB control with excellent success. The technology is based on the use of a biocide of lower potential when compared to the more common ones like hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide and chlorine gas. The active oxidizer is bromine-activated chloramines (BAC) and it is safely generated on site, by reaction between 2 common products. BAC chemistry provides significant advantages compared to other oxidizers. Because BAC is a less aggressive oxidizer, MB control is obtained at a lower oxidation-reduction (ORP) level when compared to chlorine, for example. This facilitates better corrosion rates because corrosion inhibitors are not impaired by high ORP. Another significant advantage is the ability of BAC to selectively attack the MB growth, and not be consumed by organic matter or any other components that easily react wiht strong oxidizers. Results from 3 case histories will be discussed. 56. Carboxy methyl cellulose as a protective colloid for ASA particlesThe purpose of paper sizing is to provide hydrophobicity to the aper either by acidic, neutral or alkaline sizing agents. At present ASA (Alkenyl succinic anhydride) sizing in alkaline process conditions is dominating over paper industries. ASA is fast curing size, with faster rate of hydrolysis when comes in contact with water. Cationic starch is the most commonly used stabilizer for making ASA emulsion with high starch to ASA ratio around 3:1 and the prepared emulsion has a shelf life of only few minutes. Attempts have been made to improve the emulsion stability by providing the hydrophobic encapsulation to the ASA particles providing better colloidal stability in terms of particle size distribution, Cobb value and contact angles. 58. Impact of refining poplar APMP on its characteristics and paper propertiesComponents of APMP have a great effect on paper performance and papermaking process. In the present investigation, the content and fiber configuration of different creened components after PFI refining were researched. Moreover, the relationship of fiber compositions, fiber size distribution, fiber wet weight and coarseness between pulp drainability and paper properties were analyzed. The results showed that fiber wet weight decreased rapidly in the primary refining stage and then decreased relatvely slow. As the beating degree increased, fiber lenth and coarseness decreased gradually, paper density and the tensile strength increased, opacity decreased, and the tearing strength increased first the decreased, the zenith of the tearing strength curve apeared when the beating degree reached 65ºSR. On further refining, long fibers did not swell and fibrillate, but were broken. Chemistry of optical whitening agents and their activation for better performance in paper coatingBesides physical propoerties of paper, its appearance in terms of brightness, whiteness and shade is of primary concern to papermakers as well as to end users. The common methods to increase the brightness and whiteness of paper include bleaching of pulp to higher level, addition of high bright fillers/pigments and optical whitening agent (OWA) to the paper. It is well known that OWA plays a significant role in improving the optical properties of the paper. The result of the study revealed that sulphonic groups present in the OWA also affect the optical properties of coated paper. The optical properties of coated paper are directly proportional to the number of sulphonic groups present in the OWA. For manufacturing coated paper through multilayer coating and to have better effect of OWA it is better to add it in thop-coating colour formulation rather than in under-coating formulation. The result also revealed that increased dosage of OWAs improved the optical properties upto greening point but it is not possible to further improve the same. A review of developments in paper machine clothing for achieving higher energy savingsEnergy saving through optimization of paper machine clothing offers a new approach of non-capital, low cost alternative for energy reduction in paper machine section. The forming section alone accounts for 20% of paper machines´s electricity consumption. Half of this is needed for sectional drives and over one-third for the vacuum system. The latest development of paper machine fabrics both in the structural design as well as in fabric material composition, gives paper makers opportunities to reduce friction and thus drag load on forming section. In press section, where major attribution to energy consumption is due to vacuum pumps, significant saving can be achieved by use of hydrophilic yarn based fabric which results in fast dewatering from felts thus reducing load on vacuum pumps. In dryer fabric, fabric permeability has major influence on ventilation of dryer pockets & evaporation rates. The combination of heat transfer, mass transfer and stable transport of sheet affect drying efficiency of dryer section. Novel press fabric cleaning method increases productivity in a sustainable mannerA novel press fabric cleaning method has been shown to increase the productivity of a paper machine while at the same time reducing costs and the mill´s environmental footprint. Most traditional forms of press fabric cleaning have some weakness. Continuous felt cleaning can use a relatively large amount of cleaning chemical in relation to the cleaning result. Downtime batch cleaning, while often effective reduces machine up-time. Batch on-the-run felt cleaning can impact press section stability as a result of pH swings and increased water loading during cleaning. A new method of fabric cleaning was developed to avoid the limitations of such cleaning methods. This method has been shown to use less cleaning product than continuous felt cleaning, while providing more effective results. It also avoids substancial changes in pH and water loading during cleaning events, which increases the stability in the press section as compared to batch on-the-run felt cleaning. The new method has been demonstrated to provide simultaneous financial and ecological benefits. Savings in water use, energy, and dryer section steam reduce operating cost while reducing the mill´s environmental impact. Right selection of machine clothing - a key parameter to achieve efficiency, cost & qualityIncreasing cost of inputs with ever changing customer perception on quality has become a challenge for paper manufactures to scale up their machine efficiency and produce a superior quality at an affordable price. In this context, over the years, the wet end chemistry of papermaking has moved away from the traditional sizing of paper to facilitate use of engineered fillers like Precipitated Cacium Carbonate (PCC) so that a higher filler content can reduce the fiber cost and at the same time, help producing a better quality of paper in terms of aesthetic and performance. This has led to a host of machine run ability problem and had a telling effect on life of machine clothing. This paper deals with basic in M/c clothing, an overview of latest clothing and various measures taken at JK Paper Mills, a unit of JK Paper Ltd. to address these issues and some more. The paper describes the effort taken to design the machine wire so as to improve the life by 30 to 50 % and the machine idle time for folt conditioning could be brought down to more than 50 % by adopting a serires of measures like on line felt conditioning chemical, biocide treatment etc. including change in design of clothing. 112. Impact of different fillers during papermaking using multi-layer fabricsThe configuration of the machine wire has an impact on the properties of process as well as those of paper. The machine wires having different layers are used by the papermakers depending upon the requirement and speed of machine. In the present study, the impact of different layered machine wire on water drainage and formation of paper has been studied in the laboratory. The wire having single, double and triple layers were used for making handsheets of 60 g/m2 using bleached eucalyptus pulp and different fillers. The effect of fillers such as talc, ground calcium carbonate and precipitated calcium carbonate at fixed addition level on the wear/ tear of the wire was also examined at different magnifications using image analyser. 114. Advanced screen rotor technology for reduced energyAdvanced pulp screen rotor technology has been shown to provide substantial power reductions in a wide range of mill applications. Savings are obtained with only modest investments, since a mill typically needs to only replace the screen rotor, or in some cases to reduce rotor speed. In addition to saving power, benefits of using advanced rotor technology can include increased screen capacity, improved runnability, and reduced screen wear. Several mill case studies are presented in this study to demonstrate the superior performance of advanced rotor technology. In one case, the AFT GHC(TM) Rotor was shown to provide a 54% power savings and 27% increase in screen capacity relative to the orginal screen rotor. The mill was able to use a 0,15mm slot compared to the minimum slot width of 0,20mm with the older rotor. The smaller slot led to shive removal efficiency increasing from 77, 9% to 90,4%. In two other cases, recycled paper mills in India demonstrated energy savings of approximately 40% through the use of AFT GHC Rotors. 115. Mechanical characterization of the coating layer of the coated paperGoal of this work was evaluation of mechanical properties of the coating layer on coated papers. The estimated mechanical and physical parameters of the coating layer were the Young´s modulus (E) and the strain (e). These two parameters cannot be measured directly for a pigmented coating layer, and therefore were derived from a series of mechanical tests performed on both the coated paper and the base paper. Measurements in tensile strength, two-point´s bending stiffness and dimensional stability have been performed. The methodology used involves the principles of a three-layered structure, in which all layers are assumed to be uniform and homogeneous. The results showed a greater Young´s modulus and a lower strain for hte coating layer as compared to the base paper. It was shown that the coating layer acts as a mechanical reinforcement of the complex, performing higher strength, particularly for the tensile strength and the bending stiffness. Solid waste high efficient treatment methods of a typical pulp millDifferent kinds of solid were generated in the big pulp mills which include fiber line plants, recovery plants and effluent treatment plant, etc. In this article, we introduce where and how the solid waste is produced and how the solid waste is disposed in a pulp mill whose annual production capacity is 1 million tons per year. The solid waste of a pulp mill is usually sorted by their compositions. There are three kinds of solids waste. The first is from the fiber line plant, including chip fines and screen rejects. The second is inorganic solid which is mainly from the power and recovery plant, such as ash, dregs and grits. The last is the sludge from the effluent treatment plant. In this study, the comprehensive utilization of solid wast is discussed. The solid waste is used efficiently in the mill or conjunctive use with other mills. An approach to achieve high solids coatingHigh solids coating has been an importan issue amongst the coating technologist as this route gives potential advantages not only in production cost as well as enhancement in the product quality. In the present study, the effort has been made to increase the solids level of coating color without affecting or with improved coating color rheology. It is well know that the Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC) and clay are the main pigment of any coating color recipe. Mostly GCC is supplied in slurry from about 75% solids while coating is prepared on site. Separate dispersion of clay at approx 74% solids levels causes limitation to achieve high solids level of color. So to avoid further dilution of color, coating clay was added in dry form in coating color. The rheology of color was maintained with the help of Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) in coating recipe. The particle size distribution of coating color was studied through particle size analyzer for the proper dispersion of color components. Achieving maintenance excellence using TPM philosophy - "The ESFC way"ITC-PSPD Paperboards and Specialty Paper Division) embarked on its Operations Excellence Journey in 2006 and over the years significant business results have been achieved. Be it any manufacturing industry, typically the relationship between production and maintenance departments is often adversarial and the TPM philosophy challenges this basic premise and works towards establishing a harmonius relationship and establishing the fact that both Operations and Maintenance functions are inseparable. Effect of sheet temperature on web densification during calendering We used two different experimental methods to study the effects of sheet temperature at a given moisture content on web densification and sheet smoothness. Commercially prepared paperboard obtained from the WestRock Mahrt mill in Cottonton, AL, USA, was used in this study. Laboratory made handsheets prepared from Mahrt high yield kraft pine pulp were also used for portions of this work. Sheets were sealed in moisture-proof bags, heated to various temperatures, and calendered at multiple nip loads. The resulting changes in sheet density were determined. Additionally, a pilot-scale calender was modified to preheat the non-print side of the sheet before entering the nip. The modified sheet run allowed for an increase in the bulk temperature of the board with minimal changes in the moisture content of the print surface. Increasing the bulk temperature increased board density at a given print surface smoothness. We determined that increasing the board temperature by 14ºC resulted in about 1% increase in board density. The results of this study help explain the commercial results obtained with thermal gradient calendering. Tappi Journal
